Amborsia Beetle Scouting

Scouting for Ambrosia Beetles

Landscapes and Nurserymen alike should consider putting out traps now and monitoring for Granulated Ambrosia Beetles.  One of the primary indicator plants for the emergence of these insect pests is the flowering of Saucer Magnolia.   With the warm spring-like weather we have been having
the Saucer Magnolias have began to pop out in full bloom.   I have seen them beginning to flower in parts of Transylvania and Henderson County and they are likely beginning to show color in other parts of WNC.

Invasive Grass of Concern

Cogongrass

The folk at the NC Department of Agriculture and Consumer Services asked us to spread the word about this noxious weed. The weed scientists at NCDA&CS are very concerned about Cogongrass entering our mountain ecosystem.

This is an interesting grass as one form was sold as an ornamental grass back in the early '90s under the name Japanese Bloodgrass  Imperata cylindrica " Red Baron".   Some of you may have been misinformed as I was,  and used it in landscapes or sold it in your garden centers, with the impression that it was a sterile form of the species.  I seem to recall that it did not appear to overwinter very well here in the mountains- but then some of those winters were colder than we have experienced lately.   Unfortunately,  in some climatic conditions it becomes a noxious weed.

Sycamore Lace Bugs Cause Yellow Leaves

This week I have gotten three samples from the Plant Disease and Insect Clinic with sycamore lace bug, Corythucha ciliata. I had just taken some pictures of these beautiful critters last week when I was in Asheville. They really do a number on sycamore leaves and this time of year heavily infested sycamores look pretty bad. The other lace bugs that are important landscape pests are the azalea lace bug and hawthorn lace bug. Like these, the sycamore lace bug causes stippling damage by piercing the underside of leaves with its stylet and sucking out the fluids. Large yellow and gray areas develop on the top of the leaves. In some cases, most leaves on a tree can be entirely covered in stippling damage.

Sycamore lace bugs are a native insect. They overwinter as adults under bark or in other sheltered spots and become active soon after bud break. They lay eggs in leaves and complete their lifecycle in around 30 days. However, research from China, where this is an invasive pest, shows that at high temperatures this happens much faster, even twice as fast. This suggests that it could be more abundant in hot urban areas where sycamores are often planted in parking lots and along roads. My anecdotal suggests this is true. Sycamores are wetland trees and probably are not very happy in hot, sunny, dry spots, but lace bugs clearly are.

Management of sycamore lace bugs will be similar as for other lace bugs, but you are typically dealing with large trees instead of small azalea bushes or cotoneaster. Thus systemic insecticides applied as a drench can be a good option. Applications of horticultural oil should also help keep abundance low just by killing adults and nymphs that are present.

Impatiens Necrotic Spot Virus

In the last month we have had several samples come into the Plant Disease and Insect Clinic with impatiens necrotic spot virus (INSV). These have primarily been greenhouse crops like impatiens and mums, but the virus can infect over 200 plant species. It is a lethal virus spread by thrips feeding. Managing INSV is critical because it can easily over run your crop and cause long-term problems. Thrips become infected with the virus while feeding as larvae. After they pupate, thrips spread the virus to new plants when they feed as adults.

Thus, INSV management starts with thrips management. The essence is to start with sanitation. Thrips can feed on hundreds of plants so any weeds growing in or near your greenhouse can support thrips feeding and egg laying. Get rid of pet plants and mother plants. Maybe you or your grandmother want to overwinter last year’s peppers or begonias, but do not do it. These can serve as reservoirs for thrips and virus and keep your house constantly infected.

If you have INSV in the greenhouse, get rid of all plants that show symptoms and consider getting rid of all plants that thrips have fed on. Plants do not immediately show symptoms, but they can still infect thrips. So even if you get rid of plants with visible spots thrips may continue to get infected and spread the virus. Get rid of thrips with insecticide applications or ramp up an existing biological control program to get thrips under control. Now is not the time to start a biological control program. Keep an eye out for tell tale rings and spots on leaves so you can keep ahead of this virus and of course monitor for thrips with sticky cards to keep ahead of them.

New Pest: Daylily Leafminer Active Now

The daylily leafminer is a recent pest from Asia. It was first detected in 2006, but is now spread through much of the Southeast including North Carolina. I spotted some last week on a trip to Georgia. This fly lays its eggs in daylilies and the larvae produce relatively straight, vertical mines. Pruning infested leaves will help prevent the larvae from maturing and infesting new leaves. We are conducting efficacy tests on this pest right now so I should have recommendations for next year. But for now materials targeting other leafminers such could help. A recent article about this pest is in American Nurseryman (http://www.amerinursery.com/article-7705.aspx).

Cottony Maple Leaf Scale Eggs

Cottony maple leaf scale is one of several cottony scales in the genus Pulvinaria. Last week we mentioned cottony camellia scale. You can find these now on their most common hosts maple and dogwood. Stand under a tree and look up and you will see cottony masses about the size of a cotton swap stuck to the bottom of leaves. These are the egg masses. They each contain many hundred eggs that are hatching as we speak. The crawlers will settle and feed on the leaves all summer then migrate back to branches in fall before leaf-drop.

Midge with an Eye on Maples

The ocellate gall midge, Acericecis ocellaris, causes an ocellate (single-spotted), pale green to yellow, often bright red-margined gall. Galls are 5 to 6 mm in diameter and occur primarily on foliage of red maples, but also A. saccharinum, A. spicatum, and A. pennsylvanicum. I found galls this week on trees in central Georgia so if you have not seen it here yet you will soon. Galls typically appear in May and contain a single, translucent midge larva. Larvae exit the gall and drop to the ground to overwinter as pupae. These are actually quite attractive critters that could even improve the appearance of trees. Just think if someone bred a tree with yellow and red eye-shaped dots it would be all the rage. That said, these midges usually only occur a few at a time and will not harm tree health. Keep Alert for a New Crape Myrtle Pest

One of the newest pests to plague urban trees is the crape myrtle bark scale, Eriococcus lagerstroemia. It is not yet in North Carolina, but it is probably coming soon. The first detection of crape myrtle bark scale in the U.S. was just outside Dallas, Texas, in 2004. Since then, it has spread throughout much of Texas. It has also spread to Arkansas, Louisiana, Oklahoma and Tennessee. Last week it was also found in Georgia.  

Crape myrtle bark scale is similar to azalea bark scale and oak eriococcid scale that is common on willow oaks in Raleigh. Female scales produce fluffy white filaments that cover their bodies. In spring, they produce eggs beneath their body then die. Tiny crawlers hatch from the eggs and spread around the plant. Scale crawlers can also be spread by the wind. The crawlers settle in their new spot and begin producing white filaments as they grow. They have at least 2 overlapping generations in Arkansas and probably more in warmer areas.

At low density, crape myrtle bark scale feeds in rough areas around branch collars, but as the population increases, all the bark may be covered. These scales are most often noticed because trees become covered in black sooty mold. At first, many people assume this is from crape myrtle aphids so the scales may go undetected. If you notice unusually heavy honeydew and sooty mold on crape myrtles, take a closer look at the bark.

Since this is such a new pest in the U.S., we do not have a good idea how to manage it. Drench applications of neonicotinoids have provided some control in Texas. However, since crape myrtles flower continually and attract a slew of pollinators, this may not be the best option. Insect growth regulators such as pyriproxyfen and buprofezin are effective for many other scales and may be a good option. Horticultural oil, especially the heavier dormant rate, can reduce scale abundance also.

Lecanium Scale Crawlers!

Oak and European fruit lecanium scale are one of the largest soft scales in our area. Scale ovisacs are brown and rounded reaching 6 mm in diameter. This is the most noticeable stage and is present right now. As members of the soft scale family Coccidae, lecanium scales produce honeydew that can cause sooty mold on oaks or plants below. Oak lecanium scale primarily infests oaks trees. However, European fruit lecanium can infest many tree species including oaks. They are impossible to tell apart without a microscope and even then it is hard. Large populations can reduce growth and vitality especially in newly planted trees.

Eggs are present now under adult scale covers and crawlers are beginning to hatch. The crawler stage should be targeted for best efficacy. On trees small enough to treat foliage, horticultural oil can be used. On larger trees, a systemic such as dinotefuran can be applied as a drench or trunk injection. This scale is not easily eradicated and optimal control measures are still unclear. It is attacked by many parasitoids and predators that can reduce scale abundance if protected from insecticides. Bagworms Active in Raleigh

Bagworms have been hatching for the last week or so. You can find the tiny caterpillars with tiny upright bags anywhere there are bags left from last year. The bagworm, Thyridopteryx ephemeraeformis, is a very common ornamental pest throughout the eastern United States. These pests overwinter as eggs within the mother’s bag. Larvae emerge from the bag during the months of May and June. Once they have emerged, they crawl or drift via a silk strand to nearby foliage where they begin to establish feed. Bagworms are relatively sedentary during their lifetime, most often remaining on the same tree until they pupate. Adult females are wingless and never leave the tree, while male bagworms pupate and develop into a small brown moth. 

Bagworms feed on plant foliage and can cause a significant amount of damage in a relatively short period of time. Some common trees that they infest include: maple, sycamore, oak, poplar and apple while they mostly prefer conifers. The early instar caterpillars produce a silk bag on their posterior end that gradually collects plant tissue debris from them feeding. This creates a leafy bag that camouflages them as plant tissue. Since they don’t move much during their lifetime, they are commonly found in dense populations within the same tree. These dense populations have the potential to kill conifers within one to two seasons due to defoliation and are found more often on ornamental trees rather than in forests. Since they are so discrete and easily mistaken for plant tissue, pest management for these insects can be difficult and/or time consuming. One of the most effective, yet time consuming methods of treatment, are handpicking or cutting the female pupae bags from of the branches. Since this may sometimes be impractical or impossible, there are other methods of treatment to be considered. There are chemical control options available that should be applied during the early instar stages of the caterpillars, typically during June and early July. As with many other pest insects, bagworms are susceptible to predation from parasitoids and birds which can also assist in their control. Now that there has been evidence of these early instar bagworms, it may be time to take action against them.

Cottony Camellia Scale Eggs

Cottony camellia scale is one of several cottony scales in the genus Pulvinaria. You can find these now on their common hosts including holly and camellia. Flip over leaves and you will see cottony masses about the size of a cotton swap stuck to the bottom of leaves. These are the egg masses. They each contain many hundred eggs that will hatch soon. Note that the holly this ovisac was on is still flowering. Thus, you cannot make foliar applications of neonicotinoids such as imidacloprid, dinotefuran, or thiamethoxan or really most insecticides since bees will be foraging. So check for flowering in a week or two when the eggs actually hatch when choosing your insecticides.

Cottony Cushion Scale Eggs Hatching

Cottony cushion scale is an exotic pest that became a very important pest of citrus. However, it is quite generalist and does affect several ornamental plants such as nandina, euonymus, boxwood, rose, and others. Cottony cushion scale is very noticeable when female egg sacs are present. They are present now and most of the time since there are several overlapping generations per year. Cottony cushion scale is an example of a relatively successful biological control program in the U.S. The vedalia beetle was captured in its homeland of Australia and released to bring the pest under control. Although cottony cushion scale can still be found and remains a pest it is often kept in check by this wide-spread beetle. These are in a different family (Mararodidae) than other soft scales (Coccidae). Oleander Aphids


Anyone who has grown or looked at milkweed has seen oleander aphids. They are orange and usually very abundant. Sometimes oleander aphids become so abundant they reduce plant growth and flowering but most of the time they are not very harmful. Since they are inevitable you might as well enjoy them. The most enjoyable and interesting thing about these aphids is that you can witness all kinds of ecological interactions. Inspecting a colony of these aphids you will see parasitoids and their mummies; predacious maggots of hoverflies that specialize on aphids; predacious maggots of Aphidoletes midges that bite aphid knees, inject paralytic toxins, and eat the aphids. Many other generalist predators such as green lacewing larvae, lady beetles, and minute pirate bugs also hang around. These are great plants to have in public gardens because you can always teach people about these predators and parasitoids.


Emerald Ash Borer Update


Around this time in 2010 I reported that emerald ash borer had been found in Tennessee not far from our border. I figured I would pass along the recent status of this pest in our neighboring states. Early Spring Insects

Just to catch you up over the past few weeks, you've probably already noticed the ground nesting bees. Some of the early species are andrenids, but other species will be popping up through the spring. These can upset home owners, but they are not a sting threat. Carpenter bees are very active. Males are marking off territory and looking for females. These bees are good pollinators. They can be very distracting if boring into your porch or deck. Minute Cypress Scales

The minute cypress scale may be tiny in size, but it can be a headache if you're trying to grow Leyland Cypress. It may also infest other hosts such as arborvitae, juniper and similar evergreens. The minute cypress scale, Carulaspis minima, is a small armored scale with a circular to oval cover (Fig. 13). It has a brown papery appearance with a yellow center. The scales can be found on needles and bark, where they cause yellowing and dieback. This scale overwinters on the needles, and the crawlers hatch in late spring. A recently received specimen at the Plant Disease and Insect Clinic at North Carolina State University (http://www.cals.ncsu.edu/plantpath/extension/clinic/) showed eggs still not hatched, so there is a little time in most regions before the crawler stage. Boxwood Leafminers are Active!

The boxwood leafminer is the most commonly reported pest of boxwoods in North Carolina. Accidentally introduced from Europe, this small fly seems to prefer American boxwood, although English and Japanese boxwoods are also susceptible. Boxwoods infested with this leafminer develop blisters on the lower leaf surface. Infested leaves are usually smaller, off-color and drop sooner than healthy leaves. Heavily infested boxwoods usually have sparse foliage and poor color.

Adult leafminers are active right now. The flies can be found hovering around boxwoods looking for places to lay eggs. A number of insecticides can be used to prevent the flies from landing and laying eggs or to kill the maggots that mine the leaves and cause damage. Declaration of Exterior Quarantine for the Walnut Twig Beetle and the Fungal Pathogen that causes Thousand Canker Disease in Walnut Trees

The Commissioner of Agriculture, the Plant Industry Division of the North Carolina Department of Agriculture and Consumer Services (NCDA&CS), and the Plant Pest Administrator hereby immediately establish an exterior quarantine for the walnut twig beetle, Pityophthorus juglandis, and the fungal pathogen, Geosmithia morbida sp. nov., that causes Thousand Canker Disease in walnut trees, Juglans spp., for the states of Arizona, California, Colorado, Idaho, New Mexico, Oregon, Tennessee, Utah and Washington and any other state found to be infested or infected. This exterior quarantine is needed to prevent the establishment, dissemination, or potential spread of Thousand Canker Disease ands its vector into North Carolina and other states.
